Hello everyone. Today, I'm going to talk about Hanshin Tigers. Last Sunday, the last NPB official game in 2023 was held at Kyocera Dome. This game is a Japan Series final, Hanshin Tigers vs Orix Buffaloes. The Tigers defeated the buffaloes, 7-1, and were crowned the No.1 team in Japan. This is the second time in 38 years.

The Hanshin Tigers are a popular baseball team, and many fans in Kansai were happy to see their team win. However, many young fans don't know the first No.1 situation, because they weren't born at the time.

The first time the Hanshin Tigers became No.1 team in Japan was in 1985. When I was in the second year of junior high school. At that time, I had already loved baseball and great baseball fan.

At the time, the Hanshin Tigers were a team with weak pitching ability, and it was thought that they didn't have enough starting pitchers.
Some baseball commentators predicted the Hanshin Tigers to finish last.

However, the Hanshin Tigers had tremendous batting power to compensate for their lack of pitching ability. In particular, the clean-up members 3rd, 4th, and 5th players set incredible records for home runs and batting average.

The third batter is Randy Bass. He had a batting average of 0.35 and hit 54 home runs. You might think, why not just let Bass walk and compete next batter. That is correct for baseball strategy. However, next batter was Kakefu. He had a batting average of 0.30 and hit 40 home runs. Pitcher must compete Bass.

The fifth batter was Okada, who is now Hanshin Tigers manager, and was a powerful right-handed batter. He has a batting average of 0.34 and 35 home runs. Please understand. This clean-up members had hit over 120 home runs, named “dynamite batting line” .

There is an iconic scene. These are the three consecutive back-screen home runs that Bass, Kakefu, and Okada hit off the Giants' ace pitcher, Makihara. It became a legendary scene in Japan baseball history.

The Hanshin Tigers won the league championship, would play the Japan Series against Seibu Lions. At this time, Seibu Lions won the Pacific League with a smart and powerful baseball.

Lion’s ace Kudo pitched in the first game of the Japan Series. He said, “I'll try to hold down the Bass”.

Bass swung Kudo's ball and slowly started walking toward first base, as if enjoying a home run. Looking back now, the Hanshin Tigers might have been destined to become No.1 team in Japan, at this moment.

I would like to talk about Mayumi, Hirata, Kido, and Nakanishi, but 7 minutes is too short to talk about Hanshin in 1985.

Finally, I saw on the news this week that many fans were jumping into Dotonbori. And 38 years ago, I saw the exact same news.

In order to protect human life, I suggest it is enough for the Hanshin to be No.1 once every 30 years.

Thank you very much for listening!
